A Brief History
The annual Keys Charity Golf Classic has grown from 63
golfers during their inaugural event in 1996 to average
over 144 golfers and 50 volunteers the past seven years.
Over 1,500 golfers have participated in this event since
its inception.
Founded by Mark Zeigler in 1996, the event is an
opportunity for Keys sponsors to spend a few hours with
the players, manager, and staff outside of Harry Grove
Stadium, while raising funds for a good cause.
Over 115 former and current Frederick Keys players have
participated in this event over the past 10 years,
including many who have reached the major leagues. - Brian Roberts, Sidney Ponson, Rick Bauer,
Eric Bedard, Josh Towers, John Parrish, Jerry Hairston,
Jr., Chad Paronto, Tim Raines, Jr., Luis Matos, John
Stephens, Aaron Rakers, Darnell McDonald, and John
Maine, Rick Short, Tim Corcoran, Chris Britton, Adam
Loewen, Jayson Werth, Kurt Birkins, Hayden Penn, and
Brandon Fahey to name a few. Among the former past Major
Leaguers to participate are Richie Hebner, Don Buford,
Sr., Tom Treblehorn, Andy Etchebarren, Scott McGregor,
John Stearns, Dick Hall, Dave Cash, Dave Schmidt, Jack
Voigt, Dave Stockstill, and Tom Lawless.
The 2008 Joel’s Kids recipient was Big Brothers Big
Sisters for their special needs after school program at
Rock Creek School in Frederick. The 2007-2008 Joel’s
Kids grant award recipient was Thorpewood, Inc. and
UpCounty Family Support Center. The 2005-2006 Joel’s
Kids grant award recipient was The Arc of Frederick
County. In 2004, the Joel’s Kids grant award recipient
was Thurmont Little League. Myersville Junior Baseball
League was awarded the Joel’s Kids grant award in 2003.
The Challenger Little League of Frederick County (MD)
was the inaugural grant recipient in 2002. Grant
applications are available through the
Community
Foundation of Frederick County with a submission deadline of
October 1, 2008. Interested parties may wish to take
advantage of the training session being offered on
September 18, 2008 at the C. Burr Artz Library as
described at the Community Foundation’s website.
