Community Foundation Accepting
Applications
For FY03 Grant Funding
From The Joel A. Stephens
Memorial Fund
Frederick, Maryland; March 7,
2003: The Community Foundation
of Frederick County, MD, Inc. is
accepting grant applications
from nonprofit organizations
serving Frederick County youth
or young adults 22 years of age
and younger or religious
organizations in need of funding
for non-sectarian activities
benefiting youth activities.
Funds can be used for one-time
purchases, capital expenditures,
start-up costs for programs in
existence less than six months,
purchases related to the
provision of
healthcare—including physical
and mental health—for youth and
young adults 22 years of age and
younger, or the fulfillment of
wishes of youth and young adults
in the same age range. The grant
is in the amount of $2,500.00.
Completed grant applications are
due no later than 5:00 p.m. at
the Community Foundation office,
located at 312 East Church
Street, Frederick, Maryland
21701, on April 30, 2003.
Grant funding is provided
through The Joel A. Stephens
Memorial Fund also known as
“Joel’s Kids,” one of over 400
funds held by the Community
Foundation that advance a number
of worthy community causes,
including awarding educational
scholarships and grants to area
nonprofits. The Joel A. Stephens
Memorial Fund, established by
Mark Zeigler and the Frederick
Keys, honors the memory of Joel
Stephens, a minor league
outfielder for the Baltimore
Orioles who succumbed to colon
cancer in 1998 at the age of 22.
While undergoing treatment, Joel
attempted a return to baseball
by playing with the Frederick
Keys at Harry Grove Stadium.
Joel’s love for children,
particularly those with
health-related issues,
disabilities, difficult home
situations, or suffering a loss,
inspired the creation of the
memorial fund. The organization
awarded the grant designates two
of its youth beneficiaries as
“Joel’s Kids,” who will
participate in several special
events with the Frederick Keys.
Challenger Little League, which
empowers physically and mentally
disabled children to play
baseball, received the “Joel’s
Kids” grant in 2002 to purchase
needed uniforms. For more
