ZEIGLER TO
STEP DOWN AS CHAIRMAN OF JOEL'S KIDS
FREDERICK, MD - Mark C. Zeigler, charity founder and
Chairman of the Joel's Kids Advisory Committee, has
announced his decision to step down from his active role
with Joel's Kids, after September 1, 2006.
Zeigler spearheaded the formation of the Joel A.
Stephens Memorial Fund, aka Joel's Kids, through the
Community Foundation of Frederick County (Maryland) in
1999. Named in memory of former Baltimore Orioles Minor
League baseball prospect, Joel A. Stephens, who died of
colon cancer in September of 1998, Joel's Kids had
benefited children and non-profit organizations in the
Frederick County, Maryland area since 2002.
"My goal was to keep Joel's legacy of alive," said
Zeigler. " Joel's unselfish behavior, strength and
courage to help those less fortunate were among his
special characteristics which were the basis of the
charity named in his memory," said Zeigler, who was
inspired to establish the fund after having the
opportunity to befriend Joel during his attempt to
return to the playing field in Frederick during the
summer of 1998.
"Joel wanted one more professional at bat, and sadly he
was unable to achieve his one last goal. Through Joel's
Kids, his spirit lives on to help those children receive
the one more at bat, that he was unable to achieve,"
said Zeigler.
"After seeing Joel's Kids grow over the past several
years, I felt it was time to move on to my next
endeavor, and hand over the reigns to someone who has my
vision of the fund's future, and capable of taking it to
the next step," said Zeigler.
Susan Mathurin of Suntrust Bank, who has been a member
of the Joel's Kids Advisory Committee since its
inception in 2002, has been selected to take over duties
as Advisory Chairman, effective September 2. Mathurin
has been heavily involved with Joel's Kids through
SunTrust's corporate sponsorship of the Frederick Keys
Charity Golf Classics, which has providing funding for
Joel's Kids since 2000.
Zeigler also announced the addition of Barb Freund of
the Frederick Keys, as a new member of the Joel's Kids
Advisory Committee for the 2006-2007 calendar year.
